Small Claims Court
Court: For those in rural areas, small claims cases are heard in the Justice of the Peace court. City dwellers file in the Small Claims Division of the City Court.
Jurisdictional Limit: $3,000 in City Court, and $5,000 in the Justice of the Peace courts.
Answer Period: Defendant must file an answer to the complaint within ten days.
Attorney Representation: Louisiana allows attorney representation in small claims court.
Eviction Cases: Eviction cases cannot be filed in small claims court.
Jury Trial: Jury trials not permitted in small claims court.
